WELCOME!
We hope you're enjoying a great summer wherever your travels are taking you. After a wonderfully
successful spring season on Denali (48 to the summit) and Everest (25 to the summit), we're enjoying near-perfect summer climbing in the Cascades, Sierra, Alps, and Bolivia. The Cascades
are offering us long, sunny days and excellent conditions on the glaciers while in the Sierra, a low snow year created an early rock climbing season. We've been climbing Whitney
every week, and have had a snow-free gully on the Mountaineers Route for some time. Our second Bolivia Expedition of the year is underway - be sure to check out the
daily dispatches
posted from high in the Cordillera Real! If you see the Andes as "a must" for your climbing career, join us at the end of August for a great climbing trip in the Cordillera Real.
It's my favorite mountain range in the world thanks to the absolutely superb climbing as well as the rich cultural experiences with the Aymara people.
Wishing you a fabulous summer in the mountains,

Dunham Gooding, Director

FEATURE ARTICLE: The West Face of Bolivia's 20,000-foot Huayna Potosi
A Climbing Report by AAI Guide Andrew Wexler
Andrew Wexler does it again. With his signature, seriously funny sense of humor, he recounts his recent climb of Huayna Potosi's West Face, the
longest, most sustained ice, rock, and snow climb in Bolivia's Cordillera Real. In an attempt he and his climbing partner, Danny Uhlmann, name
"The Brilliant Plan," the two set out to climb this 3000-foot face in one day - roundtrip - from La Paz.

UPDATE FROM DOWN UNDER: News on joint expeditions with our New Zealand partners
Our partners in New Zealand, Adventure Consultants (AC), are currently enjoying a full-on winter, with ski touring and ice climbing courses underway and great conditions for both.
AAI and AC staff members in New Zealand and the U.S. are still glowing from the successes this spring on Denali (48 to the summit) and Everest (25 to the summit). It's been a great year, and though it is a ways off, we are looking forward to the upcoming season. We are already receiving applications for those two peaks for our spring 2008 Everest and Denali expeditions.
The first AC-AAI Elbrus Expedition of the year is about to depart, led by Luis Benitez. Luis will stay on to guide the second trip as well, and he will be joined by Mark Sedon. The Cho Oyu, Ama Dablam, and Island Peak Expeditions are all nearly full, though applications are still being accepted for all three departures. Vinson climbs are also coming up, with Luis leading the first trip in November and Mike Roberts, who co-led our last Denali expedition of 2007, leading the Dec 27 Antarctic trip.
Lastly, AC and AAI have arranged a special group departure to Kilimanjaro from Jan 5 - 13, 2008. There are five booked on this ascent currently and plenty room for more. This trip will be led by Ang Dorjee Sherpa, who has summited Everest twelve times and who is a veteran of over twenty-five 8000m peak expeditions.

EXPERT TIPS: How to Select an Alpine Rack

by AAI guide Erik Johnson
Let's begin with a definition. Alpine climbing, in general, is: 1) a long way from the trailhead; 2) any combination of rock, snow, glacier, and ice; and
3) lots of moderately technical terrain (up to 5.6). In other words, alpine climbs are long, complex, and are best done as quickly as possible. Weight becomes
a significant factor in reducing the time and energy spent on the approach, climb, and descent. Unfortunately, somewhat at odds with the "light is right" credo is the wide
array of gear that one needs to climb safely on rock, ice, snow, and glaciers.
This article is intended to provide a starting point in choosing what kind of and how much gear to bring on any given alpine climb. Read on for
a discussion of what makes up a basic alpine climbing rack and for advice on how to choose what to bring on a climb.
